I took the men to the bedroom where Mal was resting. Hopefully, he’d be happy to see them.

More likely, I knew, he’d be pissed that I was letting them see him like this—but he would just have to cowboy up and deal with it.

Don was Mal’s brother. Lock and Luke were his friends. And whether we liked it or not, they were our best hope for figuring out a way to break the spell that was currently sucking his life away.

He owed them his time. If we didn’t find a solution soon, it might be the last time he had with them at all.

“I’ll wrangle the girls while you all figure out dinner,” Bea offered, laughing as Lily and Abbie dragged her into the living room. “Not that it seems like I have a choice.”

“Play nice, Lily!” Evie called after them. “No bossing!”

“I won’t!” Lily shouted back—but in a certain tone that suggested she was planning on doing exactly that.

“She’s going through a phase,” Evie explained with a tired laugh. “Always wants to have everything exactly her way.”

“My nieces were like that for a little bit, too.” Tentatively, I smiled at her. That felt…right. Easy, even, once I arranged my face in the right way. “They’re triplets—imagine, like, three redheaded Lilies all trying to command each other.”

Evie snorted. “You know, I’d rather not try to imagine that, if it’s okay with you. Three Lilies… One is enough of a handful as is.”

“She’ll probably grow out of it, at least?” I offered. “My nieces did.”

“Then I’m relieved for Zara,” Evie said. I blinked as I processed that for a second—how did she know my sister’s name? But then, it clicked. Of course she knew. She probably knew all of my sisters’ names—and more. Once upon a time, we’d been best friends. “Fortunately for her, her girls aren’t the devil’s daughters.” Evie sighed wistfully as she looked into the living room, where Bea, Abbie and Evie looked primed for a pillow fight. “Ordering people around and having problems with authority are kind of in her blood.”

“Then Heaven help me when I finally give birth to Lock’s little monster.” Joan patted her belly then moved to lean against the counter. “What’s for eats, Aves? I’m starvin’.”

“Hmm. There’s leftover soup from yesterday.” I opened the fridge and scanned the contents. Luckily, food was something I always kept plenty of here. At least we weren’t going to starve. “I’ve got a bunch of bone broth in here, plus lots of veggies from the garden. We could cook up a new batch pretty quick, then toss in the leftovers to make sure there’s enough?”

“Sounds good,” Evie said. “Feel free to order me around then, Chef. You always were the best cook out of the four of us.”

“I don’t suppose you’ve got any bacon handy?” Joan asked hopefully as I moved to the pantry for potatoes. “I’ve got the worst craving right now—I could eat a whole pig of the stuff.”

“In the fridge. You start with the bacon,” I told Evie.
